Chapter 6 - The View from the Window
At home, Sophie’s art supplies returned to the table by the window. She began another painting, this one of the street at sunrise.
Noah brought her a fresh cup of water for her brushes and asked where she wanted it. She pointed to a clear space within reach.
They still talked sometimes about the night she fell. Sophie could describe Vivian’s push without Noah interrupting or telling her how she ought to feel.
Noah kept his promise about his own behavior. When Sophie needed help, he asked first. When he was upset, he did not make her manage his anger.
A photograph of her exhibited painting arrived from the gallery. Sophie placed it on her desk beside the invitation she had nearly thrown away.
She had chosen to keep it. The invitation reminded her that she belonged at the exhibition before anyone decided where her wheelchair could go.
One afternoon, her friend visited to paint with her. They compared colors, spilled a little water, and argued cheerfully about which window had the best view.
Noah heard them laughing from the kitchen. He brought towels for the spill, then left the two artists to decide whether they needed anything else.
Sophie looked from her unfinished sunrise to the photograph on her desk. The fall was part of what she remembered about the gallery, but not all of it.
She dipped her brush into a brighter color. Outside the window, the street was changing in the evening light, and she still had room to paint.
