Chapter 2 - Why Sophie Was There

Sophie had been invited to the gallery’s youth art exhibition. Her painting showed the city after rain, reflected in the window of her family’s apartment.

She had worked on it for weeks. Noah helped carry supplies, but Sophie chose every color and decided when the painting was finished.

The invitation said the young artists could see their work before guests arrived. Sophie wore her favorite dress and asked Noah to meet her inside after parking.

Vivian, the gallery director, greeted her at the entrance. She pointed toward a side room and told Sophie to wait there until the exhibition began.

Sophie asked where her painting was displayed. Vivian said staff were busy and took hold of the wheelchair handles without asking permission.

Sophie told her she could move herself. Vivian pushed anyway, turning the chair away from the paintings and toward the side room.

When Sophie caught the wheel to stop, Vivian shoved harder. The front wheel struck the rug, and Sophie fell before she could protect her arm.

Now Noah listened as she told him the sequence. He repeated it to the staff member taking notes, checking with Sophie whenever he was unsure.

Vivian insisted she had wanted to clear a path. Several guests had seen Sophie ask her to stop. Their accounts were given separately, not through Noah.

Sophie leaned against her father while they waited for help. “I told her I could move,” she said. Noah nodded. “She should have listened.”
