Chapter 5 - The Next Opening
Several weeks later, Sophie decided to attend the gallery’s next exhibition evening. Her arm no longer hurt, and she wanted to see people looking at her work.
Noah asked if she wanted him beside her the whole time. Sophie said she wanted him nearby, but she would speak for herself if anyone asked about the painting.
They arrived early. A staff member greeted Sophie and showed her that the route to her painting was clear. Noah waited while she checked it herself.
Vivian was not there. The board had completed its review and chosen new leadership for the gallery. Sophie did not ask for further details that night.
Guests entered and stopped before the cityscape. One asked Sophie how she had painted the rain on the window. She described layering pale colors over darker ones.
Noah watched her point to a corner he had barely noticed. Sophie talked about the view from home, then asked the visitor which part had caught their eye.
For a while, she forgot to look toward the rug where her chair had tipped. She moved among the paintings, choosing where to pause and where to go next.
Near the end of the evening, Sophie grew tired. She told Noah she was ready to leave, and he carried her coat as they headed out.
Outside, he asked what she had enjoyed most. “Someone asked me about the paint,” she said. “They really wanted to know how I made it.”
Noah smiled. He had hoped for that from the first exhibition. This time, Sophie had been able to answer with her painting hanging beside them.
