Chapter 4 - Two Apologies
Noah apologized to Sophie the next morning. He said he had been scared and angry, but slapping Vivian had added another frightening moment to her day.
Sophie asked whether he would do it again. “No,” he said. “I’ll help you and get us somewhere safe.” She studied him, then nodded.
Vivian sent a letter through the gallery. She acknowledged pushing the wheelchair after Sophie told her to stop. She asked to apologize in person.
Sophie read the letter with Noah nearby. She said she did not want a meeting. Noah passed that answer on without asking her to reconsider.
The gallery board offered to display the painting during a later event. Sophie asked whether she could choose its placement and visit before guests arrived.
They agreed. A staff member also checked the route through the gallery with Sophie, allowing her to point out where the rug had caught her chair.
Sophie appreciated being asked. She did not want everyone to treat her as breakable; she wanted them to listen when she said she could move.
Noah stood back during that visit. When Sophie asked him to carry the wrapped painting, he did. She chose the wall and watched it being hung.
She was not ready to attend an opening. Seeing the painting in place without a crowd was enough for that afternoon, and they went home afterward.
On the drive, Sophie asked whether he liked the location. Noah said he did, then asked what she thought. “The light is perfect,” she answered.
