Chapter 3 - The Painting Behind the Wall

A clinician examined Sophie and arranged further checks for her sore arm. No fracture was found, but she needed rest and help returning safely to her wheelchair.

Noah gave his account too, including the slap. He did not ask anyone to leave that part out because he had seen Sophie’s frightened face afterward.

Vivian told the gallery board that the wheelchair had caught on the rug. She described Sophie’s fall as an accident and said Noah had attacked her.

The gallery’s recording showed Vivian pushing after Sophie had reached for her own wheel. It also showed Noah helping Sophie before striking Vivian once.

A board member called Noah with the findings. Vivian had been removed from the exhibition while the board reviewed her conduct and the gallery’s response.

Noah asked about Sophie’s painting. A staff member found it in the side room, still wrapped and leaning behind a temporary wall.

It had been accepted for the exhibition but never placed with the others. Sophie asked for it to be brought home while she decided what she wanted.

That evening, Noah set the painting against their living room wall. Sophie looked at it from her chair without saying anything for a long time.

“I thought I’d get to see it hanging up,” she said. Noah offered to ask the gallery for another date, then stopped and asked what she preferred.

“Not yet,” Sophie answered. He left the painting where she could see it and made dinner while she called her friend.
