She Pushed a Girl Out of Her Wheelchair—Then Her Father Walked In

Chapter 1 - The Chair on the Gallery Floor

Vivian shoved twelve-year-old Sophie’s wheelchair across the gallery floor. Its front wheel caught on the edge of a rug, and the chair tipped sideways.

Sophie fell beside it. Her cream dress twisted beneath her, and she began to cry while guests near the tall windows turned toward the noise.

Her father, Noah, had just entered the room. He ran to her, knelt, and steadied her shoulders before asking where she hurt.

“My arm,” Sophie whispered. Noah stayed beside her until she could sit comfortably. Then he rose and faced Vivian, who stood near the overturned chair.

“You pushed her,” he said. Vivian claimed she had only tried to move the wheelchair. Noah struck her once across the face.

Vivian recoiled, pressing a hand to her cheek. The room went quiet. Noah looked back at Sophie and saw that his own action had frightened her too.

He returned to her side. “I’m here,” he said. Sophie reached for his hand, crying harder now that she no longer had to hold herself still.

A staff member called for medical help. Noah asked Sophie not to try to get back into the chair until someone checked her arm and shoulder.

Vivian said Sophie had been blocking the walkway. Noah glanced at the wide, empty floor around them and did not answer on his daughter’s behalf.

Sophie gripped his hand and looked toward her wheelchair. “I wanted to see my painting,” she said. Noah promised they would find it when she was safe.
