Chapter 6 - What the Medal Was Really Worth

Before leaving the cemetery, Thomas touched the reproduction medal on his jacket. Sarah smiled and joked that the replacement was probably worth about fifteen dollars.

“Maybe twenty,” Thomas answered. They both laughed before his expression softened and his eyes returned to Eleanor’s name carved into the granite headstone.

“The real one isn’t valuable because somebody online says it is,” Thomas explained. “Eleanor used to pin it on me when my hands started shaking.”

Sarah understood immediately. Mark believed he was stealing an object worth thousands, but he had completely misunderstood both the medal’s price and its true value.

The medal represented Thomas’s service, but decades had added other meanings no auction listing could measure: friendship, aging, loss, marriage, and Eleanor’s careful touch.

Thomas later stored the genuine medal securely alongside Charlie Reed’s recovered dog tags and several other irreplaceable items investigators had returned after documenting ownership.

He kept wearing the inexpensive reproduction to veterans’ gatherings. When someone noticed it was not original, Thomas never seemed embarrassed by the substitution.

The original no longer needed to prove anything from his chest. Its meaning existed regardless of whether another person could recognize its authenticity or monetary value.

Mark could steal a medal, sell a decoration, or photograph an old veteran’s collection for strangers online. He could never purchase the memories attached to them.

Thomas still loved his nephew in the complicated way people sometimes continue loving relatives who deeply disappoint them. But love no longer meant protecting Mark from accountability.

Age had not made Thomas worthless. Trust had not made him foolish. Family connection had never transformed Thomas’s possessions into something Mark was entitled to take.

At Eleanor’s grave, Thomas finally understood that consequences were not betrayal. Sometimes refusing to excuse someone was the only way to stop greater harm.

Mark had successfully taken the medal from Thomas’s chest for several frightening minutes. But he could never own what Eleanor had fastened there over Thomas’s heart.
