Mark Bennett grabbed the military medal from his uncle’s chest and ripped it free, snapping the fastening while seventy-eight-year-old Thomas Bennett reached desperately toward him.

“This is worth thousands!” Mark shouted. Thomas extended his hand and ordered him to return it as they stood beside Eleanor Bennett’s grave in Virginia.

Thomas had come to place flowers on what would have been his fifty-fourth wedding anniversary. Mark had followed him through the quiet rows of headstones.

The medal was scratched, old, and attached to a faded ribbon. Thomas treasured every mark, while Mark saw only something he believed collectors would purchase.

For weeks, Mark had searched auctions and military memorabilia forums, convinced certain decorations could produce serious money. He believed Thomas barely understood what he owned.

“You have boxes of this stuff at home,” Mark said. Thomas reminded him none of those possessions belonged to him. Mark smiled dismissively.

“You don’t need them anymore. You’re almost eighty.” Thomas stared at the nephew he had helped support through jobs, divorce, and years of personal trouble.

Thomas stepped forward to retrieve the medal. Mark suddenly shoved him hard, sending the elderly veteran shoulder-first against Eleanor’s granite headstone before he hit the grass.

Pain shot through Thomas’s hip and shoulder. Mark stood above him, slipped the medal into his jacket pocket, and declared that Thomas no longer deserved it.

Thomas looked toward Eleanor’s carved name and felt humiliation before anger. This was his sister’s only son, a boy Thomas had once treated almost like his own.

“You’re going to regret this,” Thomas warned. Mark laughed and asked whether his elderly uncle planned to call the Army for help.

A woman answered from behind them. “No. I called the police.” Mark turned and saw Sarah Bennett approaching beside Officer Daniel Hayes.
