Chapter 4 - He Thought This Was About Money
“You were right,” Thomas finally admitted. Sarah looked toward the medal and answered quietly, “I wish I wasn’t.” Neither of them felt satisfaction from Mark’s arrest.
Thomas picked up the worn decoration. Despite Mark’s claims, the medal itself was not worth thousands, and its likely collector value was relatively modest.
Its true value came from Eleanor. After Thomas’s fingers began shaking with age, his wife pinned that medal onto his jacket every Veterans Day.
The last time Eleanor fastened it over his heart had been only six weeks before she died. Thomas still remembered the gentle pressure of her hands.
“He thought this was about money,” Thomas whispered. Sarah smiled sadly and answered, “Mark thinks almost everything is.” Thomas rubbed the medal’s worn edge.
Over the following months, investigators recovered numerous military items through searches connected to Mark’s case. Some belonged to Thomas, while others required extensive identification.
There was no miraculous moment when one detective instantly solved everything. Families provided old photographs, investigators compared records, and collectors who purchased items were interviewed.
Serial numbers helped when available. Other objects carried distinctive scratches, engravings, photographs, or family documentation. Some property could never be conclusively connected to an owner.
Eventually, several military keepsakes were returned to families who had believed those pieces of personal history were permanently gone after disappearing from elderly relatives.
Mark ultimately faced multiple criminal charges related to theft and possession of stolen property, alongside allegations arising from what happened to Thomas in the cemetery.
Thomas refused to celebrate his nephew’s legal trouble. “He’s still my sister’s boy,” he told Sarah, struggling to separate betrayal from decades of family memories.
“You can love someone and still let them face consequences,” Sarah replied. The sentence stayed with Thomas long after their conversation ended that afternoon.
