Chapter 2 - This Isn't About One Medal
Sarah, Thomas’s thirty-five-year-old daughter-in-law, rushed toward him while Officer Hayes approached Mark and ordered him to keep both hands clearly visible.
Mark mocked Sarah for bringing police. She demanded he return Thomas’s medal, and Mark pulled it from his pocket as though the confrontation were ridiculous.
“It’s my uncle’s medal,” Mark said. Hayes asked Thomas whether the decoration belonged to him and whether Mark had permission to possess it.
Thomas answered yes to ownership and no to permission. Mark dismissed everything as a private family dispute, but Hayes calmly ordered him to drop the medal.
Mark tossed it into the grass. Sarah carefully retrieved it while Hayes told Mark to turn around and place his hands behind his back.
Mark’s confidence vanished when Hayes produced handcuffs. He demanded to know why police would arrest him over one old military decoration taken from his uncle.
“For starters, we’re investigating property reported stolen from multiple veterans,” Hayes answered. Mark stopped moving while Thomas and Sarah stared at the officer.
Three weeks earlier, Sarah had noticed a wooden display case missing from Thomas’s home. It contained military decorations, insignia, and another veteran’s old dog tags.
Those dog tags had belonged to Staff Sergeant Charlie Reed, Thomas’s closest friend. Charlie’s daughter entrusted them to Thomas because the men remained lifelong friends.
Thomas assumed he misplaced the display case while reorganizing his home. Sarah suspected otherwise because Mark had visited only two days before everything disappeared.
During that visit, Mark asked unusually specific questions about rare medals, serial numbers, collectors, and which military decorations could legally be bought or sold.
Sarah remembered those questions and searched online. Eventually, she discovered a seller’s listing containing a display case she immediately recognized as Thomas’s property.
The seller used another name, but one photograph revealed a distinctive crack Thomas had accidentally made years earlier in the display case’s lower-right corner.
