Chapter 5 - Family Doesn't Mean Permission

Six months later, Thomas returned to Eleanor’s grave with Sarah. His shoulder had healed, and he again wore the faded olive jacket Eleanor always remembered.

Sarah immediately noticed something different. The familiar medal was no longer attached to his jacket. “Where is it?” she asked, suddenly concerned.

“Safe,” Thomas answered, tapping his chest. The medal he wore now was merely a replica. Sarah laughed and told him that was probably wiser.

Thomas placed fresh roses beside Eleanor’s headstone before sitting on the small cemetery bench. For several minutes, neither of them spoke about Mark.

Then Thomas admitted he had spent much of his life believing family loyalty meant protecting relatives from consequences whenever they made destructive mistakes.

Sarah asked what he believed now. Thomas looked across the cemetery. “Sometimes protecting a family means stopping somebody before they hurt more people.”

Several rows away stood another veteran’s grave. His family had recovered one of their missing military decorations during the investigation into Mark’s stolen-property network.

Thomas had met that veteran’s daughter when police returned the item. She cried while holding something whose monetary value would have seemed insignificant to strangers.

That moment changed Thomas. Mark had looked at aging veterans and seen slower steps, weaker hands, trusting families, and homes filled with potentially valuable collectibles.

He mistook age for helplessness. He mistook trust for stupidity. Most painfully for Thomas, Mark mistook family loyalty for permanent permission to avoid consequences.

Thomas realized his years of defending Mark had not protected his nephew. They had merely helped Thomas avoid confronting what Mark might actually have become.

Loving Mark did not require lying about him. Remembering the boy Thomas once helped raise did not require ignoring the man who shoved him beside Eleanor’s grave.
