Chapter 3 - Sarah Had Already Called the Police

Sarah contacted police rather than confronting Mark. Investigators examined the seller’s account and discovered multiple listings involving military memorabilia from several possible sources.

Some items appeared similar to property reported missing by older veterans across nearby counties, including one eighty-three-year-old man and another in assisted living.

A third veteran had died, and his daughter discovered missing medals while settling his estate. Investigators could not immediately determine where every listed object originated.

They nevertheless gathered enough information to continue the investigation and pursue appropriate warrants. Mark had no idea Sarah had already spoken with law enforcement.

That morning, Officer Hayes had arranged to meet Sarah near the cemetery regarding photographs of Thomas’s missing display case and other information she had collected.

Then Sarah spotted Mark following Thomas through the cemetery. By the time she and Hayes reached them, they witnessed the confrontation becoming immediately serious.

Hayes secured Mark and guided him toward the patrol car while Mark continued shouting that everyone was overreacting to an insignificant family disagreement.

Thomas remained seated against Eleanor’s headstone. Sarah knelt beside him, holding the recovered medal while asking whether his hip or shoulder hurt badly.

At the hospital, doctors found no broken bones, although Thomas suffered severe bruising and a sprained shoulder. Sarah stayed beside him throughout the examination.

The recovered medal rested on a nearby table. Thomas finally asked Sarah whether she had truly suspected Mark was stealing his military belongings before that afternoon.

“I suspected,” Sarah admitted. Thomas asked why she never warned him. Her expression immediately told him something he already knew but disliked admitting.

Sarah had warned him twice. Both times, Thomas defended Mark by saying his nephew was family, struggling financially, and would never deliberately steal from him.
