Chapter 6 - Sometimes Expertise Says Stop
Frank rejected the reporter’s dramatic wording. “I noticed a problem.” When she said he prevented the test, Frank nodded but refused to transform caution into heroism.
She asked whether he recognized the mistake because he knew Maggie better than anyone. Frank considered the question carefully before shaking his head. “I knew enough.”
Enough to recognize something unfamiliar beneath the wing. Enough to understand vibration. Enough to ask people with current technical expertise to stop and inspect it.
That distinction mattered. Experience did not make Frank infallible. Neither did age, rank, military service, technical certification, or the confidence of somebody holding a clipboard.
Before leaving, Frank stood beneath the same wing where Tyler had shoved him weeks earlier. Tyler joined him and nervously waited while Frank inspected the repaired routing.
“Still think the line is wrong?” Tyler asked. Frank leaned closer before shaking his head. “No.” Tyler smiled. “That’s the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me.”
Frank started walking away, then stopped. “One more thing.” Tyler immediately looked worried. Frank pointed toward the aircraft. “Don’t ever call her an ‘it.’”
Tyler laughed. “Yes, sir.” Frank looked back toward Maggie, remembering when she existed only inside stories nobody around him had personally experienced.
For fifty-three years, Maggie had lived inside Frank’s memory. Now she stood before him again, scarred, restored, imperfect, and alive with familiar sound.
The crowd had laughed when an elderly stranger demanded the test be stopped. They became respectful only after learning Captain Francis Mercer had once flown Maggie.
Frank understood why that revelation impressed them, but he also understood something more important. He should never have needed an old flight log to be heard.
Sometimes expertise arrived wearing a military uniform. Sometimes it carried engineering drawings, modern diagnostic equipment, grease-stained gloves, or decades of restoration experience.
And sometimes it looked like a seventy-six-year-old man behind a barrier, saying the one word everyone was too excited to hear: Stop."
