Chapter 5 - This Time It Shouldn't Matter
Tyler approached Frank cautiously beside Maggie. “I wanted to apologize again.” Frank continued examining a maintenance document. “You already apologized,” he reminded the younger mechanic.
“I know,” Tyler answered. He glanced toward the aircraft before admitting something had bothered him about the first apology ever since their confrontation at the expo.
“The first time, I apologized because I discovered who you were.” Frank lowered the document and waited, giving Tyler enough silence to finish the thought himself.
“This time I’m apologizing because it shouldn’t have mattered.” Tyler admitted he should have listened, maintained distance, and called security instead of using unnecessary physical force.
Frank studied him for several seconds before nodding. “That one I can use.” Tyler understood forgiveness was not automatic, but the second apology meant something different.
Eventually another engine-test day arrived. Spectators returned, cameras appeared behind the barriers, and technicians moved carefully through every inspection and checklist without rushing anything.
Frank stood beside David behind the safety line. Tyler worked with the crew, checking the repaired routing beneath Maggie’s wing before confirming his section was ready.
When the engine finally came alive, its powerful sound rolled across the field. Frank closed his eyes as vibration seemed to travel through fifty-three missing years.
For one moment, he was twenty-three again. Charlie sat beside him, Sam complained about maintenance, and Henry shouted something irritated from behind the cockpit.
Then Frank opened his eyes. Those men were gone. Maggie remained, vibrating beneath Virginia sunlight while people who never knew them carefully preserved what survived.
David leaned closer and asked, “How does she sound?” Frank listened seriously before a smile appeared. “Old.” David laughed. “So are you.” Frank glared playfully.
“Watch yourself.” For perhaps the first time since returning, Frank laughed beside Maggie without immediately feeling guilty that the men from his memories could not join him.
Later, a reporter approached and asked whether Frank believed he had saved the historic aircraft by stopping its first attempted public engine test.
