Chapter 1 - The Property Is Mine Now

“The property is mine now!” Frank Dawson shouted before shoving seventy-year-old Rose Bennett in the crowded lobby of Richmond’s luxurious Grand Jefferson Hotel.

Rose struck a marble column and collapsed onto one knee. Gasps spread among nearly two hundred investors, officials, business owners, and invited guests watching nearby.

The evening was supposed to celebrate Dawson Development’s proposed ninety-million-dollar hotel, retail, and residential project. Fifty-five-year-old Frank believed this moment belonged entirely to him.

Rose reached toward a folded document that had fallen from her hand, but Frank snatched it first and unfolded it before the stunned crowd.

“You still don’t understand,” Frank sneered. “You have no legal claim.” Then he tore the document repeatedly, scattering pieces across the polished marble floor.

Several guests raised their phones. Rose watched the fragments settle around her, then looked calmly at Frank and asked one simple question. “Finished?”

Frank laughed and told her she should have stayed retired. Three months earlier, his company had announced acquiring nearly sixty acres outside Richmond.

At the center of those sixty acres stood Bennett Orchard, land Rose’s family had owned for generations and that she operated with her late husband, Henry.

After Henry died six years earlier, Rose retired from daily operations. Frank interpreted her age, grief, and retirement as signs that she would eventually surrender.

He offered to purchase the orchard. Rose refused. Frank increased his offer several times, but every answer remained exactly the same: the land was unavailable.

Then Frank discovered Rose’s nephew Jason possessed an old power-of-attorney document created years earlier while Rose recovered from surgery and needed help managing routine affairs.

Jason also had serious debts. Within weeks, Frank publicly announced he possessed a signed purchase agreement giving Dawson Development control of Bennett Orchard.
