Chapter 2 - I Flew This Aircraft

The laughter disappeared. Two technicians joined David beneath the wing, carefully examining the same section Frank had noticed from behind the spectator barrier minutes earlier.

One technician swore quietly. Tyler stepped closer, confused, while David pointed toward a line that had been incorrectly routed during the restoration process.

The mistake did not guarantee catastrophic failure, but vibration and movement could cause dangerous abrasion. On an aging aircraft, that possibility alone justified stopping everything.

David turned toward Frank. “How did you see that from behind the barrier?” Frank looked toward the aircraft before giving an answer nobody expected.

“Because I flew this exact airplane.” David initially assumed he meant the same model. Frank shook his head and pointed toward the aircraft’s tail number.

“No. This aircraft.” David stared at the number, then back at the elderly stranger. “What’s your name?” Frank answered simply, “Frank Mercer.”

Recognition immediately crossed David’s face. The restoration team had spent nearly three years researching the transport’s complicated service history through surviving logs and maintenance records.

One pilot’s name appeared repeatedly during a particularly demanding period more than five decades earlier: Captain Francis J. Mercer. David cautiously asked whether that was Frank.

Frank nodded. Tyler stopped moving. David stared at him in disbelief. “We’ve been trying to find you for almost two years.”

Frank seemed genuinely confused. David explained there were gaps in the aircraft’s records, unexplained modifications, and handwritten maintenance references nobody on the team understood.

Frank’s anger gradually faded as he looked toward the airplane. “You call her Maggie?” David blinked. “How could you possibly know that?”

A faint smile appeared on Frank’s face. “Because we named her.” Suddenly, the aircraft stopped looking like a restoration project and became something personal again.

More than fifty years earlier, Frank had been a young military pilot aboard Maggie, carrying equipment, personnel, mail, supplies, and wounded service members between distant locations.

He remembered her smell, vibration, stubborn controls, and one rattling panel maintenance never completely silenced. More importantly, Frank remembered the men who flew beside him.
