Chapter 4 - The Names Beneath the Panel

Inside the aircraft, David showed Frank an interior panel removed during inspection. Beneath it, several faded names had been scratched directly into the aging metal.

Frank leaned closer. SAM O. HENRY W. Then he saw two initials that made his hand begin trembling against the exposed panel. C.B.

“Charlie Bennett,” Frank whispered. David asked whether Charlie had been his friend. Frank stared at the initials. “My best.” The words came out almost soundlessly.

Charlie survived military service but died seven years afterward from cancer. Frank attended his funeral and had never stepped inside Maggie again afterward.

David quietly offered Frank the pilot’s seat. Frank lowered himself into it and remained completely silent while the restoration crew watched from outside the cockpit.

David motioned for everyone to give him space. Eventually Frank placed both hands lightly upon the controls and looked around at a cockpit preserved from another lifetime.

“Everything feels smaller,” Frank finally said. David smiled. “Maybe you got bigger.” Frank looked toward him skeptically. “At seventy-six?” David answered, “Emotionally.”

Frank laughed, breaking the tension. Over the following weeks, he began visiting regularly as a historical resource rather than pretending he belonged in charge.

He identified old modifications, explained strange logbook notes, corrected dates, and helped technicians understand why previous crews had made certain practical changes decades earlier.

Whenever volunteers exaggerated an ordinary mission into heroic legend, Frank usually interrupted them. “We were doing our jobs,” he repeatedly reminded the restoration team.

He also listened carefully when younger technicians explained modern restoration techniques he did not understand. Experience gave Frank knowledge, but he never considered experience the same as infallibility.

The restoration team possessed modern expertise Frank never had. Frank possessed memories and operational experience no surviving technical manual could completely reproduce. Maggie needed both.

Then one afternoon, Tyler returned to the hangar after completing the disciplinary process and additional training required before he could resume restoration work.
