Chapter 3 - Fifty-Three Years
Frank remembered copilot Charlie Bennett, crew chief Sam Ortega, and loadmaster Henry Walsh. Some eventually became grandfathers. Others never received enough years to grow old.
With David’s permission, Frank crossed the barrier and slowly approached Maggie. He stopped beneath the wing, his hand hovering inches from the metal without touching it.
“When did you last see her?” David asked. Frank continued staring upward. “1973.” David quietly calculated the years before accidentally speaking them aloud.
“That’s fifty-three years.” Frank looked toward him. “I know how long it’s been.” David immediately regretted reducing half a lifetime to simple arithmetic.
Frank continued inspecting the aircraft until he noticed Tyler standing several feet away. The mechanic who shoved him earlier now looked deeply uncomfortable approaching him.
“Mr. Mercer, I’m sorry,” Tyler said. Frank remained silent. Tyler explained that he genuinely believed Frank intended to interfere with the scheduled engine test.
“I was trying to interfere,” Frank answered. Tyler looked confused until Frank pointed beneath Maggie’s wing. “Because you weren’t listening when I warned you.”
Tyler admitted he had not known who Frank was. Frank’s expression hardened again. “That shouldn’t matter. If I never wore a uniform, you still shouldn’t hit me.”
David immediately agreed. The aviation foundation removed Tyler from the test area while administrators reviewed his use of unnecessary physical force against a visitor.
Frank never demanded Tyler’s firing. He wanted the organization to investigate properly, but refused to accept sudden admiration merely because someone discovered his military credentials.
The engine test was postponed while technicians reinspected Maggie from nose to tail. No sabotage or conspiracy appeared. The incorrectly routed line was simply human error.
Someone had installed it incorrectly. Another person happened to notice. Frank understood mistakes happened, but he also knew mistakes became dangerous when nobody welcomed uncomfortable questions.
Two days later, David called Frank and asked him to return. Frank hesitated until David explained that restoration workers had discovered something hidden inside Maggie.
