Chapter 5 - Sixty Days to Make a Plan

Carol looked around the kitchen at relatives who had watched her humiliate Maya. Nobody defended her, and moments later she silently walked upstairs alone.

Thanksgiving dinner ended with takeout pizza. Nobody touched what remained of the ruined turkey, and the uncomfortable relatives gradually left without discussing what they witnessed.

The following two months were difficult. Carol accused Maya of stealing the family home, blamed Tom for betraying her, then blamed Richard for leaving debt.

Eventually, she met independently with her own attorney and financial adviser. For the first time, Carol examined every mortgage statement, lien, expense, and closing document.

The numbers destroyed the comforting story she had repeated for years. The colonial had not become a secure inheritance; it had become a financial emergency.

Tom and Maya had paid fair market value according to an independent appraisal. After settling debts and transaction costs, Carol still retained substantial proceeds from the sale.

There was enough remaining for Carol to purchase a smaller condominium outright without a mortgage. She finally moved eleven days before her occupancy deadline expired.

For nearly four months, Carol refused to speak with Tom or Maya. Then shortly before Christmas, Maya received an unexpected text asking one question.

“Can I bring pie?” Maya stared at the message, remembering the slap, her knees hitting the floor, and Carol calling her nothing but a housekeeper.

Tom told Maya she did not have to accept. After several minutes, Maya replied that Carol could come for dessert under one clear condition.

“If you disrespect me in my home, you leave.” Carol did not argue, threaten, or mention ownership. She sent back a single word: “Understood.”

Christmas was uncomfortable, but peaceful. Carol brought the pie, respected Maya’s boundaries, and left without attempting to control the house she once believed defined her authority.
