Chapter 3 - Actually, I Own This House Now

Carol insisted Andrew had the wrong address. He opened his briefcase and served formal notice concerning termination of her current temporary occupancy arrangement.

“Eviction?” Carol demanded as relatives whispered nearby. She insisted the colonial belonged to her, but Andrew calmly answered, “It was your house, Mrs. Bennett.”

Carol turned toward Tom, demanding to know what he had done. He remained silent until Maya stepped forward with a piece of stuffing clinging to her sleeve.

“Actually, I own this house now, Carol.” Maya explained that she and Tom had purchased it through an LLC they created specifically for the transaction.

Carol accused Maya of lying, but Andrew confirmed everything. Nobody had forged Carol’s signature, stolen her deed, or secretly transferred property without her knowledge.

After Carol fell behind, the lender began foreclosure proceedings. Tom discovered the problem early enough that attorneys could still explore alternatives before the bank completed foreclosure.

Selling before foreclosure became the least damaging solution. Carol initially refused, until her own attorney explained the financial consequences if she continued doing absolutely nothing.

Eventually, Carol signed an agreement allowing the property to be sold. She believed an outside investor was purchasing it and never asked who controlled the buying entity.

What she did not know was that Tom and Maya controlled that entity. They purchased the property legally at fair market value through an independent appraisal.

“You bought my home behind my back?” Carol demanded. Tom finally answered with a sentence that silenced her outrage for several seconds. “We saved it.”

Carol called the purchase deception. Tom reminded her they had given her mortgage money for eighteen months, only to discover she had spent part elsewhere.

When Carol accused Maya of orchestrating everything, Tom stepped between them. “No. It was mine. Maya wanted to tell you exactly who the buyer was.”
