Chapter 4 - Dad's Memory Doesn't Give You Permission

Carol demanded why Tom had concealed the buyer’s identity. His answer hurt more than anything Maya could have said: “You would rather lose it than let Maya save it.”

Andrew interrupted before another confrontation began. The sale had closed six weeks earlier, with Carol receiving the remaining proceeds after mortgages, liens, and transaction expenses.

Carol had been permitted to remain temporarily under a written occupancy agreement. That agreement contained conditions, including one prohibiting harassment or violence toward the owners.

Everyone looked at Maya’s reddened cheek, then toward the ruined Thanksgiving dinner. For the first time since striking Maya, uncertainty replaced Carol’s confidence.

Carol accused them of planning the confrontation and bringing an attorney to humiliate her. Tom explained he had invited Andrew for an entirely different reason.

They intended to tell Carol after Thanksgiving dinner that her temporary occupancy agreement would end in sixty days, giving her time to arrange another residence.

Carol accused Tom of throwing his own mother onto the street. He explained they had already located a suitable apartment only ten minutes away.

She could accept that option or use her remaining sale proceeds to choose somewhere else. Carol rejected both, insisting Richard had died inside this house.

“This is where you grew up,” Carol reminded Tom. He acknowledged every memory before looking toward Maya, who still carried the mark from Carol’s hand.

“Dad’s memory doesn’t give you permission to hurt my wife.” The sentence changed the room because Tom had spent years making excuses for Carol’s behavior.

First she was grieving, then lonely, then financially unstable. Every explanation became another reason Maya was expected to tolerate disrespect while helping keep Carol comfortable.

Maya told Carol she did not want her homeless. She was offering sixty days to make a plan, not charity, punishment, or public revenge.

When Carol asked what happened if she refused, Andrew explained the owners could pursue lawful removal procedures, although everyone preferred a voluntary and peaceful transition.
