Chapter 2 - The House Wasn't Paid Off
Carol and her late husband Richard had lived in the large suburban colonial nearly thirty years before his death left her alone two years earlier.
Carol claimed she was frightened living alone, so Tom and Maya temporarily moved into the house. Temporary gradually became permanent as Carol depended increasingly upon them.
Maya purchased groceries, Tom handled repairs, and together they paid utilities. Yet Carol treated them like unwanted guests who should remain grateful for her generosity.
Then Maya discovered something Carol had hidden from relatives for years. Despite constantly describing the colonial as fully paid off, the house carried enormous debt.
Richard had refinanced the property repeatedly before his death. By the time Tom examined the documents, the remaining mortgage balance approached three hundred ten thousand dollars.
Carol could not afford the monthly payments, so Tom and Maya quietly covered them for eighteen months while Carol told relatives her son was finally contributing.
Three months before Thanksgiving, Maya discovered a foreclosure warning hidden among the mail. Carol had stopped depositing some of the money intended for mortgage payments.
Instead, she used part of Tom and Maya’s money to cover mounting credit-card balances, allowing the mortgage account to fall dangerously behind without telling them.
Tom was devastated. Maya was furious, but rather than explode at Carol, they consulted an attorney and began examining every realistic option for saving the property.
Now, while Maya stood with a red cheek and Thanksgiving dinner scattered around her feet, the front doorbell rang and nobody moved to answer it.
Seconds later, attorney Andrew Collins entered carrying a leather briefcase. Tom saw him first and warned his mother, “Mom, stop. She’s not alone anymore.”
Andrew approached Carol, handed her an envelope, and introduced himself calmly. “Mrs. Bennett, I represent the current owner of this property.” Carol immediately laughed.
