Chapter 5 - Secrets Do Not Pay Debts

The following months were difficult. Daniel and Rachel consulted an attorney and financial adviser to understand the loan, the farm’s value, and Phyllis’s remaining obligations.

The debt was substantial but manageable. The Carter farm was not suddenly lost, despite Phyllis having spent months behaving as though disaster could arrive tomorrow.

They refinanced part of the obligation, sold unused acreage, and established a realistic repayment structure that prevented Phyllis from hiding financial problems behind increasingly desperate decisions.

The older federal documents were reviewed separately. An attorney contacted the appropriate records office before the family decided what should happen to Frank’s preserved materials.

Nothing inside proved dangerous or represented some forgotten national secret. Most documents simply recorded Frank’s involvement in a legitimate investigation closed many years earlier.

Copies of Frank’s correspondence were eventually donated to a regional veterans archive, preserving the story of an ordinary man who reported wrongdoing despite being frightened.

Phyllis apologized to Rachel more than once. Rachel eventually accepted the apology, but she refused to pretend forgiveness erased what happened inside the greenhouse.

“You don’t get to hurt me because you’re scared,” Rachel told her. Phyllis nodded and promised that if fear returned, she would speak instead of attack.

Rachel established another boundary. If Phyllis ever became physically aggressive again, Rachel and Daniel would leave rather than sacrifice their safety to preserve family appearances.

Phyllis accepted the condition. For the first time since Frank’s death, she began discussing grief, debt, and fear instead of hiding them behind anger.

Daniel also recognized how often his family had confused silence with strength. Frank buried evidence of fear, while Phyllis buried financial trouble beneath explanations and accusations.

Neither secret disappeared underground. Both remained waiting beneath the family’s ordinary life until a failing greenhouse and one curious retired police dog exposed them.
