Chapter 3 - Frank Had Hidden It for Thirty-Seven Years
Before becoming known for his orchids, Frank served as an Army logistics specialist. After active duty, he briefly supervised a warehouse for a defense contractor.
In 1988, Frank discovered government equipment disappearing from inventory. The missing property was not weapons but electronics and valuable communications components intended for legitimate operations.
Someone was falsely reporting equipment as damaged before diverting it for resale. Frank documented what he noticed and eventually reported the suspicious inventory discrepancies.
The matter reached federal investigators, and Frank became a cooperating witness. The metal box contained copies of records and correspondence connected to that old investigation.
The FBI emblem came from an evidence-return label attached to the container. Nothing suggested Frank had secretly possessed classified technology or dangerous government material.
Rachel asked why anyone would bury ordinary records beneath a greenhouse. Phyllis looked toward Frank’s orchids and quietly explained that her husband had become afraid.
One man connected to the investigation threatened Frank afterward. Nothing eventually happened, and the man was later convicted on unrelated charges, but Frank never forgot.
Years passed without incident, yet Frank developed a habit of hiding important possessions. When he rebuilt the greenhouse, he concealed the container beneath the flooring.
During a later renovation, he moved it beneath the raised orchid bed. Shortly before dying, Frank finally told Phyllis where the old container remained hidden.
Daniel could not understand why his mother had reacted with such terror decades later. Phyllis looked downward and admitted the federal records were not everything inside.
They agreed to photograph the container before disturbing anything further and contact an attorney regarding the older records. Then Daniel carefully opened the damaged latch.
Inside were protected documents, inventory records, investigative correspondence, and a brass-colored evidence envelope reflecting sunlight. Then Daniel discovered a second, much newer packet.
