Phyllis Carter shoved Rachel so hard that the thirty-year-old woman crashed into a raised orchid bed, shattering ceramic pots beneath her hands.

Dark soil and broken stems surrounded Rachel on the damp greenhouse floor. Before she could stand, Phyllis threw a fistful of potting soil into her face.

Rachel insisted she had touched nothing. Several valuable orchids had collapsed overnight, their roots showing obvious rot, but Phyllis immediately blamed her daughter-in-law.

It was hardly the first accusation. Since Rachel married Daniel two years earlier, almost everything that went wrong at the Carter farm became her fault.

A broken irrigation valve, missing pruning shears, even a mortgage payment Daniel forgot to mail somehow became evidence that Rachel did not belong there.

The greenhouse was different because it had belonged to Daniel’s late father, Frank Carter, a retired Army veteran who spent twenty years cultivating orchids.

After Frank died eighteen months earlier, Phyllis became obsessed with preserving the greenhouse exactly as he left it. Rachel understood grief, but not cruelty.

Rachel explained that she entered only because the irrigation alarm sounded. The orchids were sitting in saturated soil because something had failed in the drainage system.

Phyllis accused Rachel of acting like she owned the farm simply because she married Daniel. Rachel denied ever claiming anything remotely like that.

Before their argument could continue, barking erupted outside. The greenhouse door suddenly burst open, and a large German Shepherd charged directly toward the women.

Ranger positioned himself between Rachel and Phyllis, his body rigid. A powerful warning bark echoed through the greenhouse as Phyllis jumped backward in alarm.

Rachel ordered Ranger down. The retired police K9 obeyed, but moments later his nose turned toward the broken orchid bed and began sniffing intensely.
