Chapter 4 - You Knew I Didn't Kill Them
The second packet contained bank statements, property records, personal letters, and handwritten notes from Frank. None had anything to do with his decades-old federal investigation.
Instead, the documents concerned the Carter farm. Before his death, Frank discovered Phyllis had secretly taken out a home-equity loan without telling their son.
Phyllis used much of the borrowed money trying to rescue her brother’s failing construction company. The business collapsed anyway, leaving nearly $140,000 outstanding.
Daniel stared at his mother. She had repeatedly told him Frank’s medical expenses created the family debt. Now he understood that explanation had been deliberately false.
Phyllis began crying and insisted she planned to repair everything herself. When Daniel asked exactly how she intended to repay the money, she had no answer.
Then Rachel looked around the destroyed orchid bed and suddenly understood something else. Phyllis had recently stopped paying the company that maintained Frank’s greenhouse systems.
Unable to afford professional maintenance, Phyllis attempted to manage the irrigation herself. The drainage pump eventually failed, leaving several valuable orchids sitting in saturated soil.
Rather than admit she lacked money for repairs, Phyllis blamed Rachel. The accusation allowed her to protect another secret by attacking someone already convenient to dislike.
“You knew I didn’t kill them,” Rachel said. Phyllis covered her face and quietly admitted that she had known Rachel was innocent from the beginning.
Daniel’s expression hardened. His mother had thrown his wife into broken flowerpots because admitting financial trouble felt more humiliating than accusing an innocent person.
Rachel did not shout. She simply stepped away from Phyllis and said the fear, debt, and grief explained what happened without excusing the physical assault.
Daniel took Rachel home that evening. The mysterious box had exposed Frank’s old fear, but the newer papers revealed the secret currently damaging their family.
