Chapter 5 - I Blamed You Because You Were Convenient

Helen reminded Michael that Sarah had pushed her too. Michael agreed, then pointed out the difference. “Sarah admitted what she did immediately. You called yours accidental.”

Michael and Sarah stopped visiting Helen for several weeks. Sarah also documented her own physical conduct during the confrontation for her employer rather than hiding it.

Her firm reviewed the incident and reinforced why employees connected to insured vendors should remain removed from decisions involving those businesses. Sarah accepted that conclusion.

She had no interest in becoming the perfect hero of a story where she had also lost control and pushed another person during an argument.

Three months later, Helen unexpectedly called Sarah directly instead of contacting Michael. She asked whether they could meet privately at a local coffee shop.

Helen looked exhausted when Sarah arrived. Before discussing the firehouse, she revealed that she had sold Carter Catering to her kitchen manager and two employees.

“They apparently understand the business better than I did lately,” Helen said with a faint smile. Sarah asked whether she was doing all right.

“No,” Helen answered. The honesty surprised Sarah. After a moment, Helen added, “But I might be.” Then she finally offered the apology Sarah needed.

“I blamed you because you were convenient,” Helen admitted. The company was already struggling, but every question Sarah asked sounded like another accusation of failure.

Sarah explained she had never considered Helen a failure. Helen nodded and said she understood that now, after finally examining what had actually happened.

Then Helen acknowledged the firehouse confrontation without excuses. Shoving Sarah and pouring soup over her had been inexcusable regardless of stress, financial trouble, or fear.

The apology did not magically repair their relationship. It could not erase months of hostility, but it finally created something neither woman had possessed before: honesty.
