Chapter 3 - The Red Notice

“You went behind my back?” Helen demanded. Sarah reminded her that she had tried speaking directly first. Helen responded that Carter Catering was her company.

“And this is their building,” Sarah answered, gesturing toward the firefighters. Helen stepped closer and mocked Sarah for thinking an office job qualified her.

Sarah remained calm. “No. But I can tell you when an insurer is about to cancel coverage.” Helen’s anger instantly gave way to confusion.

Sarah opened another document carrying a red header: NOTICE OF MATERIAL SAFETY DEFICIENCIES. Helen grabbed toward the tablet and demanded to know what it meant.

Sarah explained it was not a court order but a formal risk notice concerning unresolved safety problems. Michael admitted he had seen the envelope earlier.

The firehouse belonged to the city. Sarah neither owned the building nor personally controlled its insurance, despite assumptions Helen had apparently made about her position.

Sarah’s employer administered part of the property and event liability program covering several municipal facilities, including the firehouse where the fundraiser was being held.

Because Sarah was related to the caterer, she disclosed that conflict and removed herself from the final decision. Another risk officer conducted the relevant inspection.

That independent officer reached the same conclusion. Carter Catering needed to correct specific safety deficiencies before certain operations could continue at the charity event.

“So you reported your own family?” Helen asked. Sarah shook her head. “I reported unsafe equipment.” Helen accused her of trying to destroy the company.

“No, Helen,” Sarah answered, looking around the damaged kitchen. “You’ve been destroying it yourself.” Helen stepped forward, furious enough that Sarah expected another shove.

Instead, Helen grabbed for the tablet. Sarah pulled it away. When Helen reached again, Sarah pushed her backward into a rolling food cart.

Trays rattled loudly. Sarah immediately stepped away. “I shouldn’t have done that.” Helen accused her of attacking her, and Sarah refused to make excuses.
