Chapter 2 - The Fire Chief Disagrees

Chief Hayes examined the spilled soup, overturned spice rack, and Sarah’s soaked apron before turning toward Helen and asking exactly what had happened inside his kitchen.

Helen’s voice immediately softened. “A kitchen accident.” Michael stared at his mother and corrected her in front of everyone. “You pushed Sarah.”

Helen ordered Michael to stay out of it. Hayes ignored the argument and asked Sarah whether she needed medical attention after being shoved against the shelving.

Sarah declined treatment. Helen folded her arms and complained that everyone was being dramatic while hundreds of guests outside were still waiting for dinner.

Hayes did not move. “Actually, Helen, we need to talk.” Sarah handed him the tablet, and he opened the document already displayed on its screen.

Helen demanded to know what they were reading. Hayes identified it as a safety report concerning temporary cooking equipment Carter Catering brought to the fundraiser.

Three weeks earlier, Sarah noticed worn propane hoses and a regulator that appeared damaged while helping Helen prepare equipment for the annual charity event.

More concerning, Helen planned to move some propane equipment into an enclosed service bay if bad weather interrupted outdoor preparation. Sarah immediately objected.

Helen dismissed her concerns, saying marrying Michael did not make Sarah a safety expert. What Helen apparently forgot was Sarah’s actual professional background.

Sarah worked in commercial risk management, reviewing insurance exposures involving restaurants, event spaces, and commercial properties. She documented the questionable equipment with photographs.

Sarah first attempted to raise the concerns directly. When Helen dismissed them, she contacted the firehouse event coordinator and disclosed what she had observed.

Chief Hayes inspected the setup that morning and prohibited several pieces of equipment from being used. Helen believed Sarah had merely complained behind her back.
