Chapter 4 - The Business Was Already Failing
“Yes, I pushed you, and I shouldn’t have,” Sarah admitted. Chief Hayes stepped between both women and declared that the confrontation had gone far enough.
He temporarily cleared the kitchen while firefighters and another catering team secured food service. The charity fundraiser continued that evening, but Carter Catering did not.
The larger consequences came later, not because Sarah secretly controlled the firehouse or because one red document magically possessed authority to destroy Helen’s company.
The formal notice triggered a broader review. Carter Catering’s insurer requested maintenance records, and investigators discovered several files were incomplete or inadequately documented.
Further inspection identified additional problems involving equipment and employee training. Then the company accountant uncovered something unrelated to safety but equally serious.
Helen had been using business credit for personal expenses while delaying payments to vendors. Michael confronted his mother at her dining-room table surrounded by invoices.
Helen insisted she had been fixing everything. Her plan depended heavily on expected Christmas contracts, although the company lacked enough confirmed bookings to cover obligations.
For years, Carter Catering had been successful. Then Helen lost two major corporate clients while food costs rose and operating margins became increasingly difficult.
She refused to reduce staff, restructure operations, or admit the company was struggling. Every new problem became somebody else’s fault instead of another warning.
Employees became lazy. Clients became unreasonable. Suppliers became greedy. Eventually, Sarah became Helen’s favorite explanation because blaming her daughter-in-law felt easier than admitting failure.
The business had been deteriorating before Sarah joined the family. The firehouse confrontation did not create those financial problems; it simply exposed what Helen denied.
Michael confronted his mother about something even simpler. “You pushed my wife and poured soup over her in front of an entire fire station.”
