Mother-in-Law Shoved Her Daughter-in-Law Into a Spice Rack—Then the Fire Chief Opened the Safety Report

Chapter 1 - You're Ruining My Catering Business

Helen Carter shoved her daughter-in-law backward into a metal spice rack, sending containers of paprika, pepper, and garlic powder crashing across the firehouse kitchen floor.

Twenty-five-year-old Sarah Carter hit the shelving hard. Every firefighter turned toward them while Helen shouted that Sarah was destroying the catering business she had built.

Sarah had been married to Helen’s son Michael for only four months, and Helen had disliked her from nearly the beginning of their relationship.

Michael shouted at his mother from across the kitchen, but Helen ignored him. She grabbed a large stockpot from the preparation counter and faced Sarah.

“Do you have any idea what tonight means to me?” Helen demanded. Sarah tried standing and warned her to put the stockpot down immediately.

Helen tipped it anyway. Warm soup poured across Sarah’s white catering apron, soaking her clothes before Helen dropped the empty pot onto the preparation counter.

Fortunately, the soup had been removed from heat long enough to prevent serious burns. Sarah gasped while Helen ordered her to leave the kitchen.

Outside, two hundred guests attended a charity dinner benefiting families displaced by apartment fires. Carter Catering had provided food for six consecutive years.

For Helen, the fundraiser was also a business showcase attended by city officials, potential clients, and local business owners whose contracts she desperately needed.

Carter Catering was struggling financially. Sarah knew that much already. What Helen did not understand was exactly how much her daughter-in-law had recently discovered.

Sarah slowly stood, wiped soup from her arms, walked toward the preparation counter, and picked up a tablet. Helen laughed and demanded an explanation.

“The fire chief disagrees that I’m ruining tonight,” Sarah answered. Then another voice came from the doorway. “So do I.” Fire Chief Robert Hayes entered.
