Eleanor welcomed Maya into a quiet sitting room. There were no party guests or towers of glass, only two cups of tea on a sturdy table.

For a moment, both women remembered the ballroom. Then Eleanor took Maya’s hand and thanked her for coming toward her when everyone else had stepped back.

Maya said she had seen the tower move and acted. “I was scared afterward,” she admitted. Eleanor told her she had been frightened too.

They talked about Maya’s work and Eleanor’s recovery. Neither needed to describe the crash again to understand why the other sometimes paused mid-sentence.

Victor came by later, knowing Maya had agreed only to see Eleanor. He stayed at the doorway and asked whether she would prefer that he leave.

Maya looked at him. She said she had received his apology and believed he understood what he had done. She was not ready for more conversation.

“I understand,” Victor said. He left them to finish their tea and did not ask Eleanor afterward whether Maya might change her mind.

Months later, Celeste was still answering for the assault and the financial records. Eleanor’s foundation continued its work with new oversight and recovered funds where it could.

Maya returned to the mansion once more for a small foundation event. Eleanor greeted her at the front door, and Maya chose to walk in beside her.

Across the room, Victor nodded without approaching. Eleanor and Maya found seats together. This time, when Eleanor reached for her hand, Maya held it and smiled.
