Celeste had pushed Eleanor to seize the envelope before Victor saw it. She faced investigation for the shove, the handbag, and the missing foundation funds.

Victor ended their engagement. He told Eleanor what the records showed so far, taking care not to turn questions still under review into settled facts.

Eleanor listened, then asked him about Maya. “She can decide if she ever wants to see me,” Victor said. His mother nodded. “That’s her choice.”
