Celeste denied touching anyone. “The server ran into her,” she said. Maya stared at her, stunned that Celeste could say it beside the broken glass.

Eleanor had come to the party carrying an envelope for Victor. That afternoon, she had found records suggesting money was missing from their family foundation.

She had planned to show her son privately after the guests left. Celeste, who managed the foundation’s accounts, had seen Eleanor place the envelope in her bag.
