He Blamed the Server Who Saved His Mother—Then the Camera Exposed His Fiancée

The mansion had cameras above both ballroom entrances. Investigators reviewed the recording while staff gathered accounts from guests who had seen the tower fall.

One camera showed Celeste’s hands against Eleanor’s back. Another captured Eleanor striking the lower tiers, Celeste taking the bag, and Maya running toward them.

The guards watched the recording with Victor. He saw Maya wrap herself around his mother as the glasses fell. Then he watched himself slap her.

For several seconds, Victor said nothing. He had mistaken the only person trying to protect Eleanor for the person who had put her in danger.

Celeste claimed the shove had been accidental. The recording showed her stepping forward with both hands raised before Eleanor began to fall.

Investigators examined the handbag and found the envelope Eleanor had prepared for Victor. Celeste had taken the bag but apparently had no chance to open it.

Victor read the documents with the foundation’s independent accountant. Several payments required a closer review. He handed over the records without declaring what they proved.

At the hospital, Eleanor woke. She remembered Celeste pushing her and Maya’s arms closing around her. She asked Victor whether the server had survived the glass.

“She did,” Victor said. Eleanor closed her eyes in relief. Then she noticed the strain in his face and asked what had happened after she lost consciousness.

Victor told her he had struck Maya and accused her. Eleanor turned toward him. “She saved me,” she said, her voice weak but unmistakable.
