Chapter 5 - The Apology Wasn't About the Medal

Counseling proved harder than either expected. Sarah sometimes pushed for details Thomas could not provide, while Thomas occasionally retreated into silence whenever conversations became uncomfortable.

Their counselor repeatedly redirected them from military history toward their actual marriage. The central problem was not whether Thomas could prove every story Sarah had questioned.

Thomas needed to understand that emotional distance carried consequences. Sarah needed to understand that unanswered questions never gave her permission to humiliate or physically attack him.

Sarah eventually recognized something uncomfortable about the Memorial Day confrontation. She had not thrown Thomas’s medal because she genuinely needed evidence about his military history.

She threw it because she knew it mattered to him. In that moment, causing pain had become more important than discovering whether her suspicions were correct.

Thomas faced an equally difficult truth. He had sometimes used his past as a convenient barrier, ending ordinary marital questions by suggesting subjects were simply untouchable.

Not every silence had protected sensitive information. Sometimes Thomas simply feared reopening memories involving people he saved, people he lost, and decisions he still questioned.

Amir unexpectedly helped. During occasional visits, he told Sarah stories that contained humor alongside fear, allowing Thomas’s younger years to become human rather than mysterious.

Daniel also shared memories from his father. Robert had never described Thomas as a legendary commander, only as someone dependable when frightened people needed clear decisions.

Months passed. Sarah stopped demanding dramatic proof. Thomas stopped treating vulnerability like another operational risk that could be managed through silence and emotional distance.

Their marriage did not return to what it had been during its earliest years. Instead, they began constructing something less romanticized and considerably more honest.

When another Memorial Day approached, Sarah asked whether Thomas wanted to attend the ceremony again. He considered the question carefully before answering, “Yes. With you.”
