Chapter 3 - The Man Thomas Thought Was Dead

Robert Hayes had died six months earlier after helping a veterans’ historical project reconstruct records surrounding the evacuation Thomas had avoided discussing for decades.

The research produced an extraordinary discovery. A local interpreter Thomas believed had died after the evacuation had actually survived and eventually immigrated to America.

His name was Amir Rahman, although immigration and later records used a slightly different transliteration, making him difficult for former team members to locate.

Amir had spent decades searching for Thomas. Sarah listened silently, her earlier anger slowly becoming confusion as Daniel explained why officials wanted Thomas removed.

That morning, an online announcement identifying Thomas and connecting him to the historic operation had circulated alongside personal information concerning several veterans connected with it.

Federal security officials had not identified assassins or some cinematic conspiracy. They simply requested caution while determining whether the unexpected online attention represented any credible threat.

Daniel happened to be participating in the Memorial Day ceremony, so he had been asked to deliver the message discreetly and escort Thomas somewhere less exposed.

“So nobody is coming to attack him?” Sarah asked. Daniel looked almost uncomfortable. “Hopefully not.” Thomas shook his head and began walking toward the parking lot.

Sarah followed and apologized for misunderstanding. Thomas stopped. “You didn’t need to know what happened thirty-five years ago to know not to humiliate me.”

She insisted his secrecy had made her believe he was lying. Thomas surprised her by admitting she had legitimate reasons to question how he handled their marriage.

For years, Sarah had asked about nightmares, photographs, and unexplained calls. Thomas repeatedly answered with silence, convincing himself he was protecting her from painful memories.

Instead, Thomas had built a wall between them. Sarah responded by turning uncertainty into suspicion and suspicion into contempt, until neither recognized their marriage anymore.

Daniel drove Thomas to a nearby municipal building. Inside, an elderly man with a cane turned from the window and smiled. “You got old, Bennett.”

Thomas froze. His face suddenly looked decades younger and infinitely more vulnerable. “Amir?” he whispered before the two elderly men crossed the room and embraced.
