Chapter 4 - You Americans Think You Do All the Rescuing

Sarah covered her mouth as Thomas held Amir. She had never seen her husband cry over his military past because he had never allowed her that close.

During the 1991 evacuation, Amir had carried an injured American nearly two miles through dangerous terrain, helping the group reach the extraction route Thomas coordinated.

Thomas believed Amir disappeared afterward and eventually accepted that he had died. For more than thirty years, that assumption remained one of his deepest regrets.

“You left before I could thank you,” Thomas told him. Amir laughed warmly. “You Americans always think you’re the only ones doing the rescuing.”

Thomas laughed too. Sarah realized it was the first time she had heard him discuss his service without immediately becoming distant, guarded, or emotionally unreachable.

Over the following weeks, historians documented more of the operation. Some records were publicly accessible, while other details remained restricted for legitimate security and privacy reasons.

There was no revelation that Thomas secretly controlled military forces. No general arrived offering extraordinary authority, and nobody announced that he had been an invisible super-soldier.

Thomas was exactly what he had claimed: a veteran who performed difficult work alongside others and carried memories he never learned how to explain afterward.

The security concern connected with the online information was eventually judged not credible. Thomas returned home physically safe, but his marriage remained far more uncertain.

Sarah apologized for throwing the water, tearing away the medal, humiliating Thomas publicly, and deliberately using something important to him as a weapon during their argument.

Thomas accepted responsibility for something different. He had expected Sarah to trust him while refusing for years to offer enough honesty for that trust to survive.

“I thought silence protected you,” Thomas admitted. Sarah shook her head. “Eventually, your silence made me feel like I was married to someone I couldn’t know.”

Neither pretended one conversation repaired six years of resentment. Instead, they agreed to counseling, where Thomas slowly began discussing memories he had buried for decades.
