Chapter 2 - My Father Was Alive Because of Him

Daniel asked whether Sarah was bothering Thomas. Thomas almost smiled before explaining that the furious woman standing beside them was actually his wife.

Sarah laughed bitterly. Thomas had left military service decades earlier, she argued, so Daniel’s dramatic salute proved absolutely nothing about the stories she questioned.

Daniel carried a locked black document case. After receiving Thomas’s permission, he removed a sealed folder bearing ordinary government markings and handed it carefully to him.

“We have instructions to relocate you from the ceremony,” Daniel explained. Thomas opened the folder, read several lines, and immediately asked why such precautions were necessary.

Daniel glanced toward the remaining crowd and said the details should not be discussed publicly. Sarah laughed again, calling the mysterious warning another convenient secret.

She demanded that Thomas finally explain who he really was. Thomas studied the muddy medal in his palm before quietly saying, “I wasn’t lying about my service.”

Thomas had spent much of his career supporting Army intelligence operations involving logistics, communications, personnel movements, and recovery missions during dangerous overseas assignments.

He had never been a secret assassin or mythical battlefield hero. Much of his work involved planning routes, coordinating teams, and helping people return home safely.

One operation from 1991, however, remained with him. Thomas helped coordinate an evacuation after a mission involving Americans and local partners suddenly collapsed.

Official records released years later credited senior officers while barely mentioning Thomas. He preferred that anonymity, but Colonel Robert Hayes had never forgotten what happened.

Daniel looked directly at Sarah. “Robert Hayes was my father.” Then he turned toward Thomas. “My father was alive because of this man.”

Thomas immediately corrected him. “Because of twenty-three people.” Daniel smiled faintly and replied, “My father told me you would say exactly that.”
