Months later, the rehabilitation program held another reception. Rose received an invitation addressed to her directly, with no request that she appear in anyone’s speech.

She considered it for several days. Then she called Ethan and said she wanted to go, but would arrive with a friend and meet him inside.

Ethan greeted her near the entrance. He did not touch the wheelchair until Rose asked him to hold a door while her friend walked through.

The hall was busy. Rose paused where she could see the guests, then chose a seat beside the window with enough space to move comfortably.

Ethan joined her after speaking with the organizers. They talked about the program and a book Rose had brought to lend him.

Vanessa was not there. Rose was glad she could decide whether to attend without turning the evening into a meeting she had not agreed to have.

When the reception ended, Ethan offered to escort her to the entrance. Rose accepted and asked him to carry her handbag while she guided the chair.

At the door, she reminded him about lunch on Sunday. Ethan smiled and said he would call first to confirm the time.

Rose’s friend was waiting outside. Ethan returned the handbag, and Rose checked that her new invitation was still safely inside its pocket.
