As her soreness eased, Rose returned to her usual activities. She met friends for lunch and attended appointments without making the reception the subject of every conversation.

Ethan asked if she wanted to visit the rehabilitation program’s new space. Rose said she would, provided it could be a quiet visit without a public announcement.

They went on a weekday morning. Ethan walked beside her while Rose guided her wheelchair through the wide entrance and chose where they stopped.

She spoke with the staff about the work being done there. Ethan listened, glad to hear her questions and opinions rather than an account of the fall.

On the way home, Rose asked how things stood with Vanessa. Ethan said they remained apart and were speaking honestly about what had happened.

“I won’t make that choice for you,” Rose said. “But I won’t visit her because you want me to make things easier.” Ethan accepted her answer.

Rose kept Vanessa’s letter in a drawer. She had not decided whether to respond. The decision belonged to her, and no one asked again that month.

Her bent invitation rested beside it. Sometimes she looked at it and remembered the floor. Other times, she remembered Ethan’s call asking her to attend.

Both memories were hers. Rose could tell her son the truth about either one, and he had learned to let her finish speaking.

She asked Ethan to take her to lunch the following week. He checked that the restaurant entrance would work for her wheelchair, then let her choose the table.
