She Pushed His Mother to the Floor—One Look at the Invitation Changed Everything

Medical staff examined Rose before helping her back into the wheelchair. She was sore and shaken, and they recommended a fuller check because of the fall.

Ethan went with her. He apologized for striking Vanessa in front of her. Rose said she had been frightened when both the push and the slap happened.

“I should have stayed beside you,” he said. Rose touched his hand. “Stay now,” she answered. He did, without asking her to settle anything else.

Vanessa gave her account separately. She repeated that she had not meant for Rose to fall, though several guests had seen her push.

A recording from the reception hall showed the argument near the wheelchair. It also showed Ethan’s slap. He gave his own account without leaving that out.

At the clinic, Rose learned she had no fracture. She would need rest and follow-up care for the soreness, and Ethan arranged a ride home when she was ready.

He asked whether she wanted him to stay with her. Rose said yes for the evening, but she wanted to sleep in her own apartment.

Before leaving, she asked for the invitation. Ethan had kept it in his jacket pocket. He handed it over, its corner bent from where it fell.

“It says I was invited,” Rose said. Ethan understood she was speaking about more than the reception. He promised to call her directly from then on.

Rose placed the invitation in her handbag. She was tired, and she did not want to discuss Vanessa until she had rested and decided what to say.
