Chapter 1 - The Invitation on the Floor

Vanessa shoved Rose out of her wheelchair at the reception. The engraved invitation slipped from the elderly woman’s lap as she fell beside the empty chair.

Rose lay on the floor, too frightened to move. Tears crossed her wrinkled cheeks, and her lips trembled as she looked up at the woman standing over her.

Across the hall, Ethan saw his mother fall. He hurried through the guests, calling her name, while Vanessa stepped away from the wheelchair.

“What did you do?” he asked. Vanessa said Rose had caused a scene. Ethan looked at his mother on the floor, then struck Vanessa once across the face.

Vanessa recoiled and lifted a hand to her cheek. The room fell quiet. Ethan’s anger vanished beneath the fear that Rose might have been hurt.

He knelt beside her and gently took her hand. “Mom, I’m here,” he said. Rose gripped his fingers, still crying too hard to answer.

Ethan asked her not to move until someone checked her. A staff member called for medical help while guests gave Rose space and brought a blanket.

Vanessa remained nearby, stunned. She said she had only meant to move the wheelchair. Rose heard her but kept her eyes on Ethan.

The invitation lay beneath the chair. Ethan picked it up. It was the one he had sent Rose himself, with her name printed beneath his.

“You asked me to come,” Rose whispered. Ethan nodded. “I did.” He held the invitation where she could see it and stayed beside her.
