Chapter 4 - I've Been Protecting the Estate From Him

Richard discovered Daniel’s gambling debts during the previous year and learned his son had approached a broker about Civil War correspondence and early family land records.

Daniel did not personally own those documents. Richard stopped the proposed transaction before anything left the family archive or reached private collectors.

Claire had known about Daniel’s debts for two months but remained silent because Richard instructed her not to reveal them until his estate documents were secured.

Eleanor stared at Claire and asked whether she had secretly been protecting Daniel. Claire answered, “I’ve been protecting the estate from him.”

Daniel arrived at the library approximately an hour later. He admitted the gambling debts and acknowledged contacting the auction broker about historically valuable family materials.

However, Daniel denied intending permanent theft. He claimed he planned to replace everything after securing a loan and stabilizing his finances. Nobody believed that explanation.

Richard’s estate plan did not magically erase Daniel’s debts. Legitimate creditors retained legal rights, and Daniel remained responsible for addressing the financial damage he created.

Instead, Richard placed Daniel’s inheritance inside a managed trust, preventing him from simply liquidating family assets whenever gambling losses or creditors created another emergency.

Eleanor became furious at everyone: Richard for withholding information, Daniel for lying, Claire for knowing, and herself for misunderstanding what had happened inside the library.

Then she noticed Claire’s swollen lip. Eleanor’s anger suddenly disappeared as she remembered throwing the folder and striking her daughter-in-law only hours earlier.

“I hit you,” Eleanor said quietly. Claire nodded. Eleanor apologized, but Claire did not immediately answer with forgiveness simply because the truth had changed.

“It can’t happen again,” Claire said. Eleanor promised it would not. For the first time that day, neither woman used Richard’s memory as a weapon.
