Mother-in-Law Slapped Her Son’s Wife Over the Family Legacy—Then the Will Revealed Why She Was Chosen

Chapter 1 - You Are Stealing My Family Legacy

Eleanor Whitmore hurled a folder across the old library table, striking Claire across the face as papers scattered over the hardwood floor around her.

Nearly a century of Whitmore history surrounded them: property deeds, photographs, business ledgers, journals, and private letters preserved across shelves inside the family library.

Eleanor accused her daughter-in-law of exploiting Richard Whitmore’s death to steal everything. Claire denied it, but Eleanor called her a liar and slapped her.

Claire stumbled sideways into a bookshelf. Several books fell, and when she touched her mouth, a small streak of blood appeared across her fingertip.

“Thief! Leave my son alone!” Eleanor shouted. She expected Claire to cry or retreat. Instead, the younger woman reached calmly inside her coat.

Claire removed a sealed letter and told Eleanor to read Richard’s will. Eleanor refused, insisting she needed no document explaining her own husband’s intentions.

A man’s voice came from behind the shelves. “She’s right.” Seventy-one-year-old attorney Henry Collins stepped forward carrying his familiar leather briefcase.

Henry had represented Richard for more than thirty years. When Eleanor accused him of helping Claire, he explained that he was administering Richard’s estate.

Eleanor demanded to know why Claire was searching through private Whitmore records. Henry answered carefully. “Because Richard appointed her sole executor of his estate.”

The gold brooch Eleanor had been holding slipped from her fingers. Her husband had chosen Claire, not Eleanor and not their only son, Daniel.

Richard had died suddenly six weeks earlier at seventy-four after suffering a heart attack in his study. Eleanor had assumed Daniel would control everything afterward.

“My husband would never put you above me,” Eleanor whispered. Claire held out Richard’s sealed letter. “He didn’t. This was never about being above anyone.”
