Chapter 3 - I Was His Mother Too

Eleanor walked toward the window and revealed something Richard’s letter had omitted. Margaret died from complications shortly after giving birth to her son.

Eleanor’s parents wanted the infant sent to relatives in another state, hoping distance would help bury what they considered their unmarried daughter’s disgrace.

Nineteen-year-old Eleanor refused. George Whitmore, then twenty-four and already courting her, agreed to help raise Margaret’s child rather than allow him to disappear.

Eleanor and George married the following year and eventually adopted Richard legally. The family buried the circumstances surrounding his birth, but not because Eleanor felt ashamed.

Her parents had been ashamed of Margaret. Eleanor had spent years protecting Richard from that shame while preserving the memory of the sister she lost.

“We told Richard when he was seventeen,” Eleanor revealed. Claire stared at her, stunned that Richard had known the truth for nearly his entire adult life.

“Did you really think I raised that boy seventeen years and then let him discover his life from an old piece of paper?” Eleanor demanded.

Claire looked down at Richard’s letter. She had imagined uncovering a secret kept from him, but instead discovered a truth Richard and Eleanor had already shared.

When Claire asked why Richard preserved Margaret’s letters, Eleanor wiped tears from her face. “Because she was his mother too. I never made him choose.”

Henry finally explained that Richard wanted those records protected precisely because both women belonged to his story, regardless of what previous generations tried hiding.

Eleanor asked why Richard chose Claire as executor instead of Daniel. Henry opened his briefcase and explained that Richard’s decision involved another painful family secret.

Richard feared valuable pieces of the archive might disappear because someone had already contacted a private auction broker about selling historically significant Whitmore documents.

That person was not Claire. It was Eleanor’s son Daniel, and his reason involved nearly three hundred thousand dollars in hidden gambling debt.
