Chapter 2 - Richard Chose Claire

Claire had married Daniel only four years earlier and worked as an archivist at the town historical society. Eleanor considered her an outsider to Whitmore history.

Yet Richard had trusted Claire with his estate. When she began cataloging the family library, Eleanor became convinced her daughter-in-law had manipulated a dying man.

“These records belong to the Whitmores,” Eleanor insisted. Claire answered that some certainly did, but other documents revealed a history more complicated than Eleanor admitted.

With Henry’s permission, Claire opened Richard’s letter. He had written it eight months before his death after Claire discovered inconsistencies while organizing historical records.

Richard’s birth certificate named Eleanor and her late husband, George Whitmore, as his parents. However, another document inside the archive told a different story.

It was a private letter dated 1951 and written by Eleanor’s older sister, Margaret. The moment Claire spoke that name, Eleanor’s face became noticeably pale.

Margaret had been twenty-two when she became pregnant by Samuel Bennett, a textile-mill worker the wealthy Whitmore family considered socially unsuitable for their daughter.

Margaret and Samuel planned to marry despite her parents’ objections. Before the wedding could happen, Samuel was killed in an industrial accident at the mill.

Margaret later gave birth to a son named Richard. Claire looked toward Eleanor and explained what the documents established about Richard’s biological parentage.

“You were never Richard’s biological mother.” The library became completely silent. Then Claire made a mistake she regretted almost before finishing her next sentence.

“Because you were never his real mother.” Eleanor looked devastated. Claire immediately corrected herself, explaining she had meant biological mother, not the woman who raised him.

“You think biology is what makes someone a real mother?” Eleanor asked. Claire had no answer, and suddenly the archive’s hidden story became far more complicated.
