Chapter 4 - The Little Red Light

Gary stared at the recorder before dismissing it as useless junk. Yet his eyes remained fixed on the tiny red light glowing above Martha’s fingers.

Martha explained that she had recorded more than today. She had preserved previous conversations, payment demands, changing balances, and threats connected to the house.

Emily finally understood why Martha had been visiting the public library alone. She had been researching her rights and quietly meeting with a legal-aid attorney.

Gary stepped forward and tried grabbing the recorder. Martha pulled it tightly against her chest, refusing to surrender the evidence she had spent weeks collecting.

“You think a tape scares me?” Gary demanded, although sweat had begun forming across his forehead. He insisted there was no proof he had assaulted Emily.

Emily slowly stood beside the counter and removed her phone. Her hand trembled, but the illuminated screen showed an active call still connected on speaker.

“She’s not the only one recording,” Emily said. A dispatcher’s calm voice came through the phone, telling both women that officers were approaching the house.

Gary’s face lost its color. He looked from Emily’s phone to Martha’s recorder, finally realizing how much of his behavior had been heard outside that kitchen.

Martha revealed that she had called emergency services after being shoved and deliberately kept the line connected while Gary continued making threats inside the house.

A distant siren began growing louder. Gary looked toward the front door, then toward the scattered papers, broken glass, and destroyed baby-shower table surrounding him.

He had entered believing Martha’s age and fear guaranteed silence. Instead, both women had preserved evidence while allowing his own words to expose his behavior.

When flashing red and blue lights appeared through the curtains, Gary’s confidence disappeared. For the first time that afternoon, he looked genuinely frightened.
