Emily caught herself against the counter, stunned. Blue frosting smeared across the white tablecloth while tiny baby clothes and knitted socks fell among broken serving dishes.

“This house is mine by midnight!” Gary roared. He kicked a fallen gift box aside while Martha crawled toward Emily despite the pain in her hips.
