“Where is the money, old lady?” Gary shouted, slamming both hands against Martha’s shoulders and sending the seventy-two-year-old widow backward into her kitchen cabinets.

Martha slid onto the hardwood floor, her floral cardigan twisting beneath her. Above the doorway, cheerful baby-shower banners and pastel balloons made the violence seem even uglier.

Gary towered over her in a black leather jacket, demanding twenty thousand dollars for a five-thousand-dollar loan Martha had taken during her late husband’s surgery.

The original debt had been painful but manageable. After her husband died, Gary began adding unexplained fees, penalties, and interest Martha insisted she never accepted.

Martha had paid him repeatedly, yet the balance somehow grew larger every month. Each visit brought another handwritten demand and another warning about losing her house.

Emily appeared in the kitchen doorway wearing a pastel pink baby-shower dress, one hand resting protectively over her seven-month-pregnant belly as she saw Martha below Gary.

“Get away from her!” Emily shouted. Gary barely looked at her before placing one boot beside Martha’s knee and demanding that the older woman answer him.

Martha pressed her palm against the cabinet, trying to steady herself. Beneath her cardigan sleeve, her fingers touched something small and hard inside her pocket.

Emily moved toward them despite Martha quietly telling her to stay back. She had loved her mother-in-law like family long before marrying Martha’s son.

Gary sneered that nobody could protect Martha now. He believed her late husband’s medical debt had given him complete control over the frightened widow.

Outside, their suburban Virginia street remained peaceful. Inside, Martha heard the kitchen clock ticking while Gary continued threatening everything her family still had.
